He focusses on the tea instead, and when the tea is done he focusses on the soup, more slowly. That isn't going to be finished; but he finishes enough of it that he actually manages to feel a little better. When the tissues arrive and he manages to decongest himself to some degree, he feels slightly better than that, too.
