[Painted eaves have been broken, with the repairs still yet unpainted. Stone is cracked. The aquaducts, of course, would have been the first to be repaired; but they still show the off colour of the stone, and the buildings below the water damage from the breaks.

[Flowers are no longer in abundance. There should be flowers.]

Not knowing will be worse. And waiting will only mean there's nothing with which to distract myself later.

[No; best to tear the bandage off, as it were. They pass by a house Kratos remembers used to sell pastries from their window; it's shuttered and empty, decrepit. Another, a ways down, sold bread -- and still does, judging by the smell wafting toward them which twists Kratos's stomach with its jarringness. Without meaning to, he speaks, nodding toward the first building.]

There used to be a family here who sold pastries. They were in friendly competition with the family just down the way, with the baked goods. They used to hold unplanned eating contests, dragging any soldier fresh from the field off the street to 'judge' the merits of their goods. No one ever left hungry.
