- until Kratos appears to intervene and have the Chosen group get Yuan out of there
- Mithos gets Kratos tho and he’s a bit mad cos, yanno, traitor and all

- Kratos retires in Iselia under the name Irving to raise Lloyd after the death of his wife
- no exsphere. ageing occurs! so does a beard and a braid
- teaches Lloyd swordplay, but on the sly, to avoid the other villagers noticing. his daytime job is weaving
- Lloyd finds the box of their exspheres and wants details. after some prodding by Dirk, Kratos explains how exspheres are made and that one is Anna's life. Lloyd is too young yet, but when Lloyd comes of age (~15) Kratos lets him make his own decision re wearing it
- Lloyd chooses not to wear the exsphere
- Genis befriends Marble and Lloyd meets her, as in canon; this happens before the journey begins, with the fallout
- difference being that Colette is still in the village so they can't be too horrible, so they just demand Lloyd be turned over for a flogging

origin
- Kratos tells Lloyd the dad thing in Triet
- dad and son feelings ensue
- they culminate at the Tower of Salvation in Kratos stabbing Yggdrasill in the back
- unfortunately he does not quite die but impales Kratos against a wall and goes berserk on the Chosen party to the point of Yuan stepping in to help
- that is, by threatening to stab Kratos in the back while he's vulnerable (with Kratos's permission)
- Yggdrasill calls his bluff and fails, and Yuan does the thing
- while Yggdrasill is distracted the Chosen's group nail him but good and he retreats
- luckily while heart-stabbing happened, Kratos's cruxis crystal is still intact, and between Raine's healing and Yuan's mana transfusion he survives long enough to be taken to the Triet base and a refresher
- stuff happens in some fashion or other up until opening Origin's seal
- as it turns out, the mana tranfusion has fused the lock, so to speak, and Kratos can't unlock the seal even voluntarily
- only way to get Origin out at this point is to let him fuse with Kratos, so Kratos becomes Origin
- stipulation of this: Kratos refuses to let go of his humanity
- luckily Yuan already has a literal bond with him thanks to the mana transfusion, so with him as his summoner Kratos can keep his humanity, and only use Origin's powers when Yuan summons them

- but hey, they messed up but good and it's the only way they can reunite the worlds.

~ 2000 years in, Kratos and Yuan conspire to kill Mithos and succeed, sorta
- he's stuck inside his exsphere, possessing people
- but he manages to survive and while Kratos and Yuan claim Derris-Kharlan for their base, he takes most of the angels as 'fallen', as well as the Eternal Sword
- most of his bases are hidden behind dimensional slips created by the sword - Iselia included
- Origin refuses to trust either Kratos or Yuan with the job, anyhow, and they don't have a summoner
- instead they're forced to fight Cruxis, embroiling the worlds in an angelic war between Cruxis and the new organisation of Chayim
- the Chosen bloodlines are more important to Cruxis than Chayim, but Mithos seals the seals so only the Chosen bloodline can flip the mana switch. Kratos and Yuan need someone to do that until they can reunite them, so the Journey remains an institution, just without compulsory death at the end
- there is angelification tho, if only so Chayim gets more soldiers and so the Chosen can defend themselves against Cruxis
- Kratos sends Anna and Lloyd to Iselia, because even though enemy territory, it's the safest place there is for them
- Anna get word to Kratos that the Desians are using Iselia as a long-term cruxis crystal cultivation location, and that the sword is held there
- her spy succeeds but is intercepted, and Mithos locks down the dimensional slip to prevent exit and access by angels for ~15 years
- Lloyd grows up in a town with a heavy half-elf population and believing he's training to help the good guys
- he has his own cruxis crystal as a host, but doesn't tell his mother due to the faith-based propaganda encouraging hosts not to bring it up or risk the powers not taking
- he wants to help though, so he steals a key-crest to ensure he can fight
- Yuan and Kratos plan to assault the town and shrine but Mithos uses the sword to interrupt travel between worlds, keeping Yuan in Tethe'alla and forcing Kratos to attack Iselia alone.

scenario one: Iselia is attacked by Chayim to claim the sword, with the sword already gone
titans
- Yggdrasill captures Kratos before Kvar finds Anna and Lloyd, but after Kratos makes an Eternal Ring
- Yuan figures hell no and raises the Renegades to try and take Derris-Kharlan, rescue Kratos and solve the split-world problem
- the attack fails. a lot.
- Renegades are wiped out, Kratos is still in Cruxis's hands, but Yuan manages to escape with the Eternal Ring
- Cruxis follows him to Triet base, which gets destroyed and the few remaining Renegades scatter

- and then move straight on to rescuing Kratos in Derris-Kharlan
- then they get to the Tower and realise Yggdrasill has Kratos under a Prometheusesque punishment a la 'impaled on the Eternal Sword to suffer the Seed's pain and watch the Chosen get murdered'
- luckily this does not happen, as they manage to rescue him and escape Yggdrasill instead, barely
- retreat to Botta's hiding-place in Asgard so Kratos can recover
- and also find out that Lloyd is actually alive
- the Chosen group goes around to make as many pacts as they can while in Sylvarant
- they get up to Aska when Yggdrasill sends his angels to attack Asgard
- cue Yuan and Kratos being unstoppable battle gods together
scenarios
scenario one: in which Yuan leads the Chosen's party to the Tower of Salvation to dismantle all the traditions ever, and find Kratos waiting for them in serious need of a rescue.
scenario two: in which being in safety reveals that Kratos is not precisely unscathed, but he's doing his best.

[Behind Nethan and out of his view, Zelos is giving Yuan an are-you-sure-about-this look. Not because he thinks Nethan would arrest Yuan -- they're way past that now -- but because throwing caution to the winds has a tendency to leave Yuan incredibly grumpy afterwards and that's no fun for anyone.]

Nethan takes an automatic step back, hand on the hilt of his sword. That's the weapon one of the guards described Yuan carrying while he saved the Chosen's life. That's the giant, heavy, double-ended sword no one could find among Yuan's possessions afterwards. A wing-pack -- why didn't anyone think of that?]
Why in the name of Martel didn't you present that while we were searching for it?
[The moment the question leaves Nethan's mouth, he regrets it. The answer's obvious. They'd have confiscated it and arrested him, whereupon he'd have been executed.
That's what Nethan should be doing right now, in fact. Oddly, he's finding it difficult to move.]

[Zelos starts.] Yes?
I -- suppose there's a reason you've been lending your weapons to a half-elf?
[It's a very flat, very obvious lie, and Nethan's keenly aware of nearly everyone in the courtyard changing their gazes from the impossible weapon to Nethan himself. It's an obvious lie, but it's also plausible deniability, and anyone here who doesn't know Yuan will either defer to Nethan's decision or try not to piss off the Chosen.]
What do you -- oh. Yep, there's a reason. He won't be able to match Kratos without some major help.
[Despite everything, Nethan's mouth quirks. He rather doubts that.] Alright then. You have everyone's attention already. Please... feel free to use it.

[Kratos can't say he's happen about defaulting to plausible deniability. He hadn't realised things had gotten so bad in Tethe'alla. But it works, for now. Instead Kratos only tips his head with the faintest suggestion of amusement, gently but firmly keeping Lloyd against him (but not able to keep him from squirming.]
It's true. I'd beat him far too easily if he was using a sword and shield.
[He issues Lloyd with a mental warning not to burst out, and Lloyd subsides grudgingly.]

[Even if he can recognize the relative practicality of it, the suggestion that the Swallow in any way belongs to someone else makes Yuan bristle.]
[...he keeps it from being too visible, at least, and with a short nod to Nethan, turns to seek more open ground, the Swallow angled behind him so it won't be in the way for the short walk.]
[When there's enough space, he turns, taking up a more solid stance, and focuses on Kratos.]
[Well. Kratos can take the brunt of his anger at the situation. They can work it out this way, instead of something more unwise. Yuan reaches out with his free hand. Beckons.]

[Kratos is glad to oblige. He sets his shield on his arm and draws his sword with a smooth motion, pleased in this instance to make the first move. Neither of them has needed to test the other for centuries.
[So he starts without a pause, just as soon as his sword is drawn, with a quick thrust he expects to be easily blocked. He's already preparing to curtail the sweep he knows still be coming.]

[Just Kratos, and just the fight.]
[Yuan diverts the thrust with the same motion he uses to sweep -- and Kratos knows that's coming, and he sees Kratos knowing that's coming, and there's no reason not to give it to him when they're still warming up, but he doesn't give it his full strength, instead using the momentum Kratos pushes aside to pull the Swallow around his body and sweep upward instead.]
[He isn't entirely aware he's smiling.]

[If this was a real battle, he'd be trying to stop the speed of Yuan's blade. It isn't. Not really. It's to push them both, because they don't get many chances these days; and it's to show off a bit. For that reason, Kratos isn't entirely as economical as he usually is.]

[Yuan keeps the Swallow in constant motion, using himself as the pivot for its sweeps, faster and faster with his strength and its momentum. The blade almost sings as it moves, and he expects Kratos to catch him again and again, and he's never disappointed. It's flashier than it might be if he was just trying to kill Kratos; there's a sort of joy in the movement and having such control over it, feeling the Swallow as only part of himself.]
[He's aware of the audience, but they don't seem to matter all that much.]

[Yuan and the Swallow alone might have been a dance. Against the enduring ring of Kratos's sword and shield they're more like the hammer in a smith's hands, forging hot steel into something unyielding; a stone turning the river's course, over and over, never broken by the crash.
[Lloyd's encouraging cheers are distant to the rhythm of breath, and the light-footed tap of boots on hard ground, and the match of scraping steel over and over. The close of the fight is unspoken, more a sense of how long they've been matched and that it does need to end. Between one step and another Kratos sets himself forward and braces, and takes the Swallow's edge full in a blow which would shatter a lesser shield, and still makes Kratos's feet slide.
[It never seems complete until he gets to feel the weight of Yuan's speed and strength, and know he can still hold.]

[Recalling himself, Yuan breathes deep and steps back, swinging the Swallow away and behind him again in one smooth motion. His arm doesn't even tremble. He inclines his head, not quite to the point of a bow, but closer than he usually gets.]

[If Nethan didn't know any better, he'd have thought this was a choreographed scene from a play. Knowing it isn't, that it can't be, puts his heart in this throat. More than once he was sure someone was going to die, and more than once the only reason he didn't charge in and stop the duel was that both the Chosen and Lloyd seemed utterly unconcerned. They both watched the whole thing with no small amount of fascination and excitement.]
[He very nearly charges in anyway with that final blow. Nethan's felt the strength of Yuan's blows himself, and that was with both a normal sword and Yuan fairly obviously holding back. Trying to block a hit like that --]

[-- Nethan cuts his movement off before it's become much more than a brisk walk. It's showing off, he realises. They're showing off. How old is Kratos? He can't be much older than Nethan himself, and being able to match Yuan regardless...]

I'm serious! I never get to see Yuan having fun. I keep telling him he needs to get out more, but he never listens.
[Nethan, for his part, and with a lack of any other convenient reaction presenting itself, is just staring. So is most of the rest of the courtyard.]

[The familiar dry bickering is easy to slip into, when he's just been fighting Kratos, before he entirely has the attitude of the much less arrogant archivist over his shoulders again.]
[And then Yuan's conscious of the eyes on him again. There are two options: to keep his bearing or let it slip away from him, and either one is going to be obvious in its own way. This may have been a horrible idea. And yet he can't bring himself to regret having the time for sparring with Kratos.]
[He weighs the Swallow in his hand, presses it back into the wing-pack. There's the familiar feeling of missing weight, like a half-missed step on the stairs. Yuan compensates, and inclines his head to Nethan. Polite. Slowly, the military solidity seeps out of his bearing.]

[For the most part Kratos follows Yuan's lead on demeanour; likewise, the fierce resolution seeps out of Kratos as he moves toward Lloyd, unbuckling his shield to hand it off to his vibrating son. By that time, Kratos seems understated again, an ordinary mercenary with a lanky frame and not enough bulk.]
Hmh. Well, maybe when I get back we can do it again, provided the Knight-Sergeant is amenable.
[It's a tolerantly amused response to Zelos, while Kratos stretches that arm. Oof; he's going to be feeling that in the morning.]

[The Chosen's taking over the debrief, it seems. Not that Nethan minds, right at this moment. He's happy to stand there and be at a loss for words a little longer.]

[Yuan will not be admitting that he needs to get out more, as he really doesn't.]
[He supposes he should be grateful Zelos is taking over, riding rampant over any protests Nethan might have. If the Chosen says so, it's surely all right, after all. And yet it's also true Yuan would benefit from, at the very least, a lack of animosity from Nethan.]
[So he raises his eyebrows gently at Zelos, and looks back to Nethan.]

[The look Yuan gives Zelos makes him trail off into silence. On its own, Nethan would appreciate that, the same way he appreciates anything that helps keep the Chosen behaving. But directly after that fight, it...]
[... it's like a son deferring to his father. Neither the King nor the Pope would be happy to hear that a half-elf has so much influence over the Chosen's behaviour. And yet, Nethan reminds himself, for several months no one avoided half-elves quite like Zelos himself did.]

[This is Lloyd, curious and earnest, and finally allowed to talk. Kratos clears his throat, suspecting the place may not be something Lloyd should hear about, and frankly wondering how Zelos knows about it, and vying to change the subject.]

[Lloyd bounces on his toes, patting his swords, to declare:]

Thank you, yes. Kratos and I haven't seen each other in some time, and it would have been difficult to find a suitable space otherwise.
[And at Lloyd Yuan slants a glance over that's almost transparently fond to those who have seen him look at Zelos before.]
